Lose weight without moving a muscle

Lose weight without moving a muscleNeed another reason to hit the snooze button? Your fat cells need sleep, too!

The more shut-eye you catch at night, the easier your fat cells can prevent weight gain. In a new study published in Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers at the University of Chicago directly linked sleep loss to a decline in the cells’ ability to react to the hormone insulin.

In the study, seven people slept for 8.5 hours four nights in a row. Four weeks later, researchers repeated the process, but shortened each night’s sleep to a mere 4.5 hours. After less sleep, participants’ whole-body insulin sensitivity was down by an average of 16 percent.

What that means: In the short term, a decrease of fat cells’ insulin sensitivity can lessen the production of the hormone leptin, which goes to the brain and could both make you hungrier and heavier, says study author Matthew Brady, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine at Chicago. Even worse: Over the long term, continually low insulin sensitivity could lead to total-body resistance to insulin and the development of type 2 diabetes.

Brady says the fix could be as simple as grabbing the right amount of sleep each night, adding that it could be just as important as a balanced diet and exercise. “Just as you can become mentally groggy when you don’t get enough sleep, your fat cells can become metabolically groggy without enough sleep.” His recommendation: Catch at least seven hours each night.

Google's sculpture doodle: Who was Auguste Rodin?

google_doodle_auguste_rodin.png, Google's sculpture doodle: Who was Auguste Rodin?Monday's Google home page pays homage to the French sculptor Auguste Rodin on his 172nd Birthday. Auguste Rodin was born in November 12, 1840 in Paris into a working-class family.

Rodin was always fascinated by art and took up drawing when was ten years old. When he was 14 years of age, he enrolled himself at Petite École, a school that specialised in art and mathematics where he studied drawing and painting for three years.

After passing out from Petite École, Rodin applied to take admission in the Grand École art college in Paris but failed to do so even after three attempts. After his rejection, he completely gave up the hope of being an artist and joined Catholic order. There he met Saint Peter Julian Eymard, who was the founder and head of the congregation. He was one of the first to spot the talent in Rodin and motivated him to get back to his sculptures.

Encouraged by his appreciation and support, Rodin created his first sculpture with the subject The Man with the Broken Nose, which was displayed in 1864. The scultpure featured a head that was "broken off" at the neck, the nose flattened and crooked, and the back of the head was completely absent. Needless to say, it was not very well received by the critics.

The Man with the Broken Nose this and the few other sculptures that followed failed to get Auguste Rodin any recognition. Despite the initial setbacks and criticism, Rodin never changed his style and slowly his work started to get noticed. By 1900, Rodin had become a world famous artists and some of his notable works included The Age of Bronze, The Thinker, The Three Shades, and The Kiss.

Later Auguste Rodin came to be regarded as the founder of modern sculpture and the Google doodle today features his sculpture The Thinker. The Thinker is a marble and bronze sculpture, which is now on display at the Musee Rodin in Paris.

On the personal front, Rodin met his partner Rose Beuret in 1864. Though both of them had a son, they did not formally get married for the next fifty three years (till 1917), just two weeks before Rodin's death.

Auguste Rodin died on November 17, 1917 because of lung congestion. A cast of The Thinker was placed next to his tomb in Meudon; it was Rodin's wish that the figure serve as his headstone and epitaph

Happy Halloween ... not! Gory, sexual costumes turn Mom off

Happy Halloween ... not! Gory, sexual costumes turn Mom offIt’s Halloween. You know that, of course. And you probably have your costume all picked out. Apolitical tongue-in-cheek Big Bird outfit, perhaps. Or maybe a Honey Boo Boo get up.
If you’re a mom (or dad, for that matter), chances are you’re even more prepared. You’ve not only figured out your own look – a combo of funny or scary but still appropriately parental – and have already purchased (or sewn, or gathered) a fantastic outfit for each one of your kids. You’ve plotted with them the best candy routes and know the afternoon start time of the wholesome town Halloween parade.

This is how I imagine it, at least.

Because it doesn’t work like that at our house. Not even close.

Actually, I don’t even have a costume for our daughter, who at 19 months is just the age that greeting cards and catalog ads seem to think is perfect for Halloween dress up. (What’s cuter than a young toddler dressed up like a pumpkin? Or a cat? Or, as Pottery Barnsuggests, a $79 Max from “Where the Wild Things Are?”)

I just didn’t get it together this year. And I am feeling pretty darn guilty about it.

But also conflicted.

You see, over the past few weeks, I’ve been reading more and more stories about what I can’t help but feel are really problematic trends in Halloween costumes for kids.

It was the sexualization of little girls that I first noticed. (Our guest blogger, Rebecca Haines, wrote about this in her post a few days ago; it’s also a topic that I’ve delved into in the past – check out our magazine cover story “Little girls or little women? The Disney Princess Effect.”)

It started when I went to find her a cat costume. Baby M loves kitties, including but not limited to ours, and since I am not most creative Halloween costumer in the first place I thought that’d suffice.

Now, there are some really cute toddler cat costumes online. But there are also a whole lot of short skirts and “pretty kitties” and pint-sized models holding their tails just so. Eeww. And powers-that-be help you if you veer from household pets into some of the fairy or Tinker Bell costumes out there. Or any other of the sexy-vampires-in-training outfits. For my baby girl? No thank you.

So I turned to more traditional fare. What about witches? Goblins? Super heroes? (Does anyone make a Captain No outfit? That’d be appropriate.)

And what I found was scary.

I mean that literally.

There are some incredibly freaky outfits out there for the under-five set. The Associated Presswrote about this the other day, detailing how gory costumes once reserved for preteens are now increasingly sold for toddlers – think Freddy Krueger and Chucky in blood-splattered pint-sized packages. Even the “sock monkey,” apparently, is being sold in kindergarten size as a bloody zombie sock monkey costume.

Yikes. For real.

Because, while I realize I sound like a total drag here, I just can’t get excited about exposing our daughter to blood and gore and sexuality and anonymity. I mean, that’s why we don’t let her watch television.

Moreover, many children her age get confused and troubled by strange changes in environment. While it might be empowering for her later to chose a costume and take on a different identify for a day, and while it would certainly be cute for us adults now, why force her into what, at this age, is an unexplainable – and likely very scary – situation? Or, for that matter, teach her that it’s OK to go up to random people’s doors, ring the bell, and take whatever they give you? (Again, cool for older kids, impossible to explain to younger ones.)

She is at a stage, I decided, where this Halloween thing just doesn’t make sense.

She is also at a stage where she fights like a marine when I try to put on her shirt and pants. The idea of trying to stuff her into a snowsuit of a cat or dog costume – even the cute kind – makes me shudder.

So those are all of my excuses.

But I’ve got to say, this morning I feel a little disappointed. She really would have been cute. And all her little friends are doing it.

Maybe there’s time to run to Target or something after all. (Is that where you get kids costumes?) We’ll just avoid the bloody, sexy baby witch number.

Happy Halloween, everyone.

Staying safe on Halloween night

Staying safe on Halloween nightNeighborhoods will be crawling with princesses, supermen, ninjas and ghosts on Halloween night. Keeping your kids safe out on the streets can be a little tricky for parents.

The thing about Halloween is kids are thinking about candy. They're not thinking about the cars, or getting tripped up by their costume, or having an allergic reaction. That's where you can step in, and help your child stay out of the emergency room.

South Fulton Medical Center emergency room Dr. Dion David likes kids. He just doesn't like seeing them wasting Halloween in his emergency room. He had some safety advice for parents.

"I would say it's never a good time to let their kids go out on their own. Always have a supervisory adult and travel in packs. You never know who the stranger next door is going to be. Not to scare anyone, but definitely don't let your kids go by themselves anywhere," said David

David says one of the most common reason kids end up in the emergency room on Halloween is that they fall.

"Sometimes the mask slips up on their face, they don't see where they're going: trip, fall injuries," said David.

Halloween is also tricky for kids with food allergies. If they're severe, kids should trick or treat with their epi-pen, just in case. David says tell your kids not to eat the candy until they get home and you look through it together.

"Make it a fun thing for the kids, sit down, throw all the candy out on the table," said David.

If your child has food allergies, check the labels.

"A lot of time chocolates come with a lot of fillings in them. So you want to make sure if your child is allergic to coconuts, peanuts, strawberries, make sure you look at the ingredients that kids are going to be taking in," advised David.

Disney buying Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion

Disney is paying $4.05 billion to buy Lucasfilm Ltd., the production company behind "Star Wars," from its chairman and founder, George Lucas. It's also making a seventh movie in the "Star Wars" series called "Episode 7," set for release in 2015, with plans to follow it with Episodes 8 and 9 and then one new movie every two or three years.
The Walt Disney Co. announced the blockbuster agreement to make the purchase in cash and stock Tuesday. The deal includes Lucasfilm's prized high-tech production companies, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, as well as rights to the "Indiana Jones" franchise.
Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement that the acquisition is a great fit and will help preserve and grow the "Star Wars" franchise.
"The last 'Star Wars' movie release was 2005's 'Revenge of the Sith' — and we believe there's substantial pent-up demand," Iger said.
Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become the division's president and report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Lucas will be creative consultant on new "Star Wars" films.
Lucas said in a statement, "It's now time for me to pass 'Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers."
The deal brings Lucasfilm under the Disney banner with other brands including Pixar, Marvel, ESPN and ABC, all companies that Disney has acquired over the years. A former weatherman who rose through the ranks of ABC, Iger has orchestrated some of the company's biggest acquisitions, including the $7.4 billion purchase of animated movie studio Pixar in 2006 and the $4.2 billion acquisition of comic book giant Marvel in 2009.
Disney shares were not trading with stock markets closed due to the impact of Superstorm Sandy in New York.

Obama visits storm victims while Romney campaigns

Obama visits storm victims while Romney campaignsPresident Barack Obama, locked in a fierce re-election bid, is emphasizing his incumbent's role for a third straight day, skipping battleground states to visit victims of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, a state he's confident of winning. The president's actions have forced his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, to walk a careful line and make tough choices.

The former Massachusetts governor must show respect for the superstorm's casualties all along the Eastern Seaboard. ButRomney can ill afford to waste a minute of campaign time, with the contest virtually deadlocked in several key states and the election six days away.

After tamping down his partisan tone Tuesday at an Ohio event that chiefly emphasized victims' relief, Romney planned three full-blown campaign events Wednesday in Florida, the largest competitive state. Sandy largely spared Florida, so Romney calculates he can campaign there without appearing callous.

Obama's revised schedule is a political gamble, too. Rather than use the campaign's final Wednesday to woo voters in tossup states, he will go before cameras with New Jersey's Republican governor,Chris Christie. Christie is one of Romney's most prominent supporters, and a frequent Obama critic. But Christie praised Obama's handling of superstorm Sandy, a political twist the president's visit is sure to underscore.

Obama also took full advantage of incumbency Tuesday. He visited the Red Cross national headquarters — a short walk from the White House — to commiserate with victims and encourage aid workers.

"This is a tough time for millions of people," the president said. "But America is tougher."

While Obama and Romney moved cautiously Tuesday, their campaigns exchanged sharp words inOhio and expanded their operations into three Democratic-leaning states, a move that will reshape the contest's final six days.

Romney's campaign is running ads in Minnesota and Pennsylvania, and a pro-Romney group is doing the same in Michigan. The three states were considered fairly safe for Obama, but his campaign is taking the threat seriously. It sent former President Bill Clinton to Minnesota on Tuesday and it is buying airtime in all three states.

Republican strategists differ on the Romney campaign's thinking. Some think Romney's aides fear losing all-important Ohio, and they hope for a stunning last-minute breakthrough elsewhere to compensate. Others say the GOP camp has so much money — and so few chances to buy useful airtime in saturated states — that it can spend millions of dollars on a long shot without scrimping in a battleground.

"If they didn't have so much money, they wouldn't be able to do something with so little chance of success," said Democratic strategist Tad Devine.

Some Republicans played down the significance of the expand-the-map strategy.

"This always happens this time of year" in a big campaign, said Republican consultant Mike McKenna of Richmond, Va. "They see a poll or two" that suggests a sudden tightening of the race in a place like Minnesota "and they get all excited."

"They tend to chase shiny objects," McKenna said. Ohio, he said, remains by far the most important state for Romney to win.

Another sign that Ohio looms large for the Romney campaign: a guest-filled rally in suburban Cincinnati on Friday to kick off the campaign's final four days. Set to join the GOP ticket are golf legend Jack Nicklaus, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Meanwhile, Democratic groups bitterly complained about a TV ad the Romney camp is running in the Toledo and Youngstown areas of Ohio. The ad suggests that Jeep will move its Toledo car-making facility to China, a claim Jeep executives deny.

Democrats called the ad a brazen lie and a sign of desperation. Even some Republicans worried that Romney has gone too far in a state where voters follow the auto industry closely.

"It's the kind of thing that happens late in the campaign, when everybody's tired and you're not quite yourself," McKenna said. "It didn't help. But I don't think it's a big thing. At this point, everybody has made up their mind."

Vice President Joe Biden planned to campaign Wednesday in Florida. Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, was scheduled to campaign in his home state, Wisconsin.

Woman's Eyes Are Open Wide By Cellphone Photos At Work

DEAR ABBY: There is a man at work I'm very attracted to. He seems to be equally attracted to me. The problem is, he has shown me two pictures of his privates that he has on his cellphone. When he did it, it wasn't completely out of context of our conversation and our interest in each other. We do not have a physical relationship (yet), but I'm considering it. How weird is it that he has these pictures on his phone? -- GOT AN EYEFUL IN ILLINOIS

DEAR GOT AN EYEFUL: That must have been some conversation! It's amazing either of you get any work done with so many pheromones floating in the air. From my perspective, what your co-worker did was "premature" considering you have no social relationship (yet). It could also be considered a form of flashing.

However, while I consider what he did to be overexposure and not a particularly impressive courtship technique, displaying pictures of his anatomy on his cellphone is not unheard of among men who think like adolescents.
DEAR ABBY: I'm a waitress at a 24-hour restaurant in a small town. Most of my customers are regulars, and for the most part we talk about current events and what is going on in each other's lives. Last night, two of my regulars came in and one tried to grab my hand after the other put his hand up the sleeve of my shirt. Both repeatedly asked me incredibly personal questions about my love life and finances, and I'll admit, I froze and then I walked away.

In any other kind of work environment what happened would be considered sexual harassment, but I'm not sure what to do about it, since they're customers and I'm the employee. At what point is the customer really wrong? -- MAY I TAKE YOUR ORDER?

DEAR MAY: The point at which the customer is really wrong is when he (or she) repeatedly asks personal questions about a server's love life and puts his (or her) hands on the server. The way to handle it is to report what happened to your supervisor or employer, and make certain that in the future you are not the person taking their order. What happened was inappropriate anywhere -- and that includes in your restaurant.

Teenager is found guilty of aggravated murder in deadly Craigslist robbery scheme in Ohio

An Ohio teenager taken under the wing of a man defence attorneys described as a master manipulator was found guilty of aggravated murder Tuesday for his role in a deadly plot to lure men desperate for work with phoney Craigslist job offers.

Prosecutors in the weekslong trial painted 17-year-old Brogan Rafferty as a quick student of violence and willing participant in three killings, while the defence argued he was acting under the duress of his alleged accomplice, a self-styled chaplain depicted as a mentor.

Authorities say Rafferty, of Stow, helped Richard Beasley, of Akron, lure four victims at separate times with bogus Craigslist job offers to a nonexistent cattle farm in rural Noble County in southeast Ohio; they say the motive was robbery. Authorities say Beasley shot and killed three of the men; the fourth victim was shot in the arm and survived.

Rafferty stood with his hands clasped behind his back and showed no emotion as the verdicts were read. His mother leaned over and cried softly.

Led from the courtroom, Rafferty shook his head and said, "Nothing to say." He didn't respond to reporters' questions about the verdict.

Prosecutors and the defence, who are under a gag order, didn't comment afterward. The father of victim Timothy Kern flashed a "thumbs up" after the verdicts were read but declined to comment when he left the courtroom.

Jury forewoman Dana Nash and other jurors said it was a difficult decision because of the boy's age, calling him "a child" on a couple of occasions.

Jurors said they worked on the 25 charges against Rafferty one by one, with the most difficult one involving evidence surrounding the death of the first victim, Ralph Geiger. Rafferty was acquitted of a single identity theft charge involving Geiger.

Jurors debated each charge and often reviewed their own notes and evidence presented at trial, including audio interviews Rafferty gave investigators.

Nash said they were skeptical of some of Rafferty's testimony, saying they felt as if he contradicted himself at points, as well as in his interviews with investigators.

"We were trying to be fair, and we were fair," Nash said afterward. "We listened to everything, we observed everything, and we feel we made the right decision."

Rafferty had testified that he didn't want to be a part of such violence and said he went along with the plan only because he feared for his life.

"I thought he'd kill me," Rafferty said.

Rafferty was tried as an adult but faces a maximum potential sentence of life in prison because he is a juvenile. His sentencing is set for Nov. 5.

Beasley, 53, has pleaded not guilty and could face the death penalty if convicted at his separate trial.

Jurors reached the verdict on their fourth day of deliberations, convicting Rafferty of three counts of aggravated murder and one count of attempted murder.

The man who survived, 49-year-old Scott Davis of South Carolina, had testified as the prosecution's star witness, identifying Rafferty as Beasley's accomplice and telling a harrowing story.

Davis told a crowded, hushed courtroom that he had moved to the Canton area after selling his South Carolina business to be closer to his family, and responded to a Craigslist ad to work as a farmhand.

He said he met Rafferty and a man who called himself "Jack" for breakfast before driving to an isolated Noble County farm.

Prosecutors say that "Jack" was actually Beasley, and that he urged Davis into a wooded area to look for farm equipment.

Davis said he heard a gun cock and turned around to find himself face to face with a handgun. He said he pushed the weapon aside, was shot in the arm and fled as "Jack" fired at him.

Davis said he kept falling as he ran away but eventually made it to a creek bed, tried to stop the bleeding and waited for dark. In rising pain and worried that the blood loss would kill him, Davis said he climbed to a hilltop, found a house and asked to call 911.

"I was getting weak at that point," Davis testified.

During Rafferty's trial, defence attorney John Alexander painted Beasley as the mastermind and said that the first killing came without warning for Rafferty, who "had no idea any of this was going on."

After the first killing, Alexander said that Beasley warned Rafferty to keep quiet and co-operate by reminding him that he knew where his mother and sister lived.

Prosecutor Emily Pelphrey told jurors that Rafferty chose to participate in the killings, saying he was a "student of violent crime."

"He made the choices he wanted to make," she said.

Prosecutors also showed jurors photographs of a suitcase filled with weapons found in Rafferty's bedroom, including a sawed-off shotgun, a .22-calibre pistol, two knives and ammunition. None of the weapons was conclusively linked to any of the three killings.

Jurors also were shown photos of the graves of the three men killed in the plot and said they were just trying to improve their lives and find work.

The three men were Ralph Geiger, 56, of Akron; David Pauley, 51, of Norfolk, Va.; and Timothy Kern, 47, of Massillon. Authorities say they were targeted because they were older, single, out-of-work men with backgrounds that made it unlikely their disappearances would be noticed right away.

All the victims were robbed of things including personal items, a truck and a weapon, prosecutors say.

Davis' escape on Nov. 6, 2011, is what led authorities to find Pauley's body in the same area where Davis was shot. Geiger's body also was found in Noble County, while Kern's body was found in a shallow grave near an Akron-area shopping mall.

Beasley was a Texas parolee who returned to Ohio in 2004 after serving time on a burglary conviction. He was awaiting trial on prostitution and drug charges when authorities took him into custody.

Sandy leaves death, damp and darkness in wake

Sandy leaves death, damp and darkness in wakeMillions of people from Maine to the Carolinas awoke Tuesday without power, and an eerily quiet New York Citywas all but closed off by car, train and air as superstorm Sandy steamed inland, still delivering punishing wind and rain. The U.S. death toll climbed to 33, many of the victims killed by falling trees.

The full extent of the damage in New Jersey, where the storm roared ashore Monday night with hurricane force, was unclear. Police and fire officials, some with their own departments flooded, fanned out to rescue hundreds.
"We are in the midst of urban search and rescue. Our teams are moving as fast as they can," Gov. Chris Christie said. "The devastation on the Jersey Shore is some of the worst we've ever seen. The cost of the storm is incalculable at this point."
At least 7.4 million people across the East were without electricity. Airlines canceled more than 12,000 flights.

Lower Manhattan, which includes Wall Street, was among the hardest-hit areas after the storm sent a nearly 14-foot surge of seawater, a record, coursing over its seawalls and highways and into low-lying streets.

Water cascaded into the gaping, unfinished construction pit at the World Trade Center, and the New York Stock Exchange was closed for a second day, the first time that has happened because of weather in more than a century.

A huge fire destroyed as many as 100 houses in a flooded beachfront neighborhood in Queens on Tuesday, forcing firefighters to undertake daring rescues. Three people were injured.
A downtown hospital, New York University's Tisch, evacuated 200 patients after its backup generator failed. About 20 babies from the neonatal intensive care unit were carried down staircases and on battery-powered respirators.
And a construction crane that collapsed in the high winds on Monday still dangled precariously 74 floors above the streets of midtown Manhattan. And on Staten Island, a tanker ship wound up beached on the shore.

With water standing in two major commuter tunnels and seven subway tunnels under the East River, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it was unclear when the nation's largest transit system would be rolling again. It shut down Sunday night ahead of the storm.

Region hit by Sandy struggles to resume daily life

People in the coastal corridor battered by superstorm Sandy took the first cautious steps Wednesday to reclaim routines upended by the disaster, even as rescuers combed neighborhoods strewn with debris and scarred by floods and fire.

But while New York City buses returned to darkened streets andthe New York Stock Exchange prepared to reopen its storied trading floor, it became clear that restoring the region to its ordinarily frenetic pace could take days — and that rebuilding the hardest-hit communities and the transportation networks that link them together could take considerably longer.

"We will get through the days ahead by doing what we always do in tough times — by standing together, shoulder to shoulder, ready to help a neighbor, comfort a stranger and get the city we love back on its feet," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

As the city began its second day after the megastorm, New Yorkers noticed an uptick in traffic and a small sign of normalcy: people waiting at bus stops.

On the Brooklyn Bridge, closed earlier because of high winds, joggers and bikers made their way across the span before sunrise. One cyclist carried a flashlight. Car traffic on the bridge was busy, and slowed as it neared Manhattan.

By late Tuesday, the winds and flooding inflicted by the fast-weakening Sandy had subsided, leaving at least 55 people dead along the Atlantic Coast and splintering beachfront homes and boardwalks from the mid-Atlantic states to southern New England.

The storm later moved across Pennsylvania on a predicted path toward New York State and Canada.

At the height of the disaster, more than 8.2 million lost electricity — some as far away as Michigan. Nearly a quarter of those without power were in New York, where lower Manhattan's usually bright lights remained dark for a second night.

But, amid the despair, talk of recovery was already beginning.

"It's heartbreaking after being here 37 years," Barry Prezioso of Point Pleasant, N.J., said as he returned to his house in the beachfront community to survey the damage. "You see your home demolished like this, it's tough. But nobody got hurt and the upstairs is still livable, so we can still live upstairs and clean this out. I'm sure there's people that had worse. I feel kind of lucky."

Much of the initial recovery efforts focused on New York City, the region's economic heart. Bloomberg said it could take four or five days before the subway, which suffered the worst damage in its 108-year history, is running again. All 10 of the tunnels that carry commuters under the East River were flooded. But high water prevented inspectors from immediately assessing damage to key equipment, raising the possibility that the nation's largest city could endure an extended shutdown of the system that 5 million people count on to get to work and school each day. The chairman of the state agency that runs the subway, Joseph Lhota, said service might have to resume piecemeal, and experts said the cost of the repairs could be staggering.

Power company Consolidated Edison said it would be four days before the last of the 337,000 customers in Manhattan and Brooklyn who lost power have electricity again and it could take a week to restore outages in the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Westchester County. Floodwater led to explosions that disabled a power substation Monday night, contributing to the outages.

Surveying the widespread damage, it was clear much of the recovery and rebuilding will take far longer.

When New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie stopped in Belmar, N.J., during a tour of the devastation, one woman wept openly and 42-year-old Walter Patrickis told him, "Governor, I lost everything."

Christie, who called the shore damage "unthinkable," said a full recovery would take months, at least, and it would likely be a week or more before power is restored to everyone who lost it.

"Now we've got a big task ahead of us that we have to do together. This is the kind of thing New Jerseyans are built for," he said. President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit the state Wednesday to inspect the storm damage.

By sundown Tuesday, however, announcements from officials and scenes on the streets signaled thatNew York and nearby towns were edging toward a semblance of routine.

First came the reopening of highways in Connecticut and bridges across the Hudson and East rivers, although the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan, and the Holland Tunnel, between New York and New Jersey, remained closed.

A limited number of the white and blue buses that crisscross New York's grid returned Tuesday evening to Broadway and other thoroughfares on a reduced schedule — but free of charge. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he hoped there would be full service by Wednesday. Still, school was canceled for a third straight day Wednesday in the city, where many students rely on buses and subways to reach classrooms.

In one bit of good news, officials announced that John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Newark International Airport in New Jersey would reopen at 7 a.m. Wednesday with limited service. New York's LaGuardia Airport remains closed.

The New York Stock Exchange was again silent Tuesday — the first weather-related, two-day closure since the 19th century — but trading was scheduled to resume Wednesday morning with Bloomberg ringing the opening bell.

Amtrak also laid out plans to resume some runs in the Northeast on Wednesday, with modified service between Newark, N.J., and points south. That includes restoring Virginia service to Lynchburg, Richmond and Newport News, Keystone trains in Pennsylvania, and Downeaster service between Boston and Portland, Maine.

But flooding continues to prevent service to and from New York's Penn Station. Amtrak said the amount of water in train tunnels under the Hudson and East rivers is unprecedented. There will be no Northeast Regional service between New York and Boston and no Acela Express service for the entire length of the Northeast Corridor. No date has been set for when it might resume.

But even with the return of some transportation and plans to reopen schools and businesses, the damage and pain inflicted by Sandy continued to unfold, confirming the challenge posed by rebuilding.

In New Jersey, amusement rides that once crowned a pier in Seaside Heights were dumped into the ocean, some homes were smashed, and others were partially buried in sand.

Farther north in Hoboken, across the Hudson from Manhattan, New Jersey National Guard troops arrived Tuesday night with high-wheeled vehicles to reach thousands of flood victims stuck in their homes. They arrived to find a town with live wires dangling in the floodwaters that Mayor Dawn Zimmer said were rapidly mixing with sewage. At nightfall, the city turned almost completely dark.

About 2.1 million homes and businesses remained without power across the state late Tuesday. When Tropical Storm Irene struck last year, it took more than a week to restore power everywhere. The state's largest utility, PSE&G, said it was trying to dry out substations it had to shut down.

Outages in the state's two largest cities, Newark and Jersey City, left traffic signals dark, resulting in numerous fender-benders at intersections where police were not directing traffic. And in one Jersey City supermarket, there were long lines to get bread and a spot at an outlet to charge cellphones.

Trees and power lines were down in every corner of the state. Schools and state government offices were closed for a second day, and many called off classes for Wednesday, too. The governor said the PATH trains connecting northern New Jersey with Manhattan would be out of service for at least seven to 10 days because of flooding. All the New Jersey Transit rail lines were damaged, he said, and it was not clear when the rail lines would be able to open.

In Connecticut, some residents of Fairfield returned home in kayaks and canoes to inspect widespread damage left by retreating floodwaters that kept other homeowners at bay.

"The uncertainty is the worst," said Jessica Levitt, who was told it could be a week before she can enter her house. "Even if we had damage, you just want to be able to do something. We can't even get started."

The storm caused irreparable damage to homes in East Haven, Milford and other shore towns. Still, many were grateful the storm did not deliver a bigger blow, considering the havoc wrought in New York City and New Jersey.

"I feel like we are blessed," said Bertha Weismann, whose garage was flooded in Bridgeport. "It could have been worse."

And in New York, residents of the flooded beachfront neighborhood of Breezy Point in returned home to find fire had taken everything the water had not. A huge blaze destroyed perhaps 100 homes in the close-knit community where many had stayed behind despite being told to evacuate.

John Frawley, 57, acknowledged the mistake. Frawley, who lived about five houses from the fire's edge, said he spent the night terrified "not knowing if the fire was going to jump the boulevard and come up to my house."

"I stayed up all night," he said. "The screams. The fire. It was horrifying."

There were still only hints of the economic impact of the storm.

Forecasting firm IHS Global Insight predicted it will end up causing about $20 billion in damage and $10 billion to $30 billion in lost business. Another firm, AIR Worldwide, estimated losses up to $15 billion — big numbers probably offset by reconstruction and repairs that will contribute to longer-term growth.

"The biggest problem is not the first few days but the coming months," said Alan Rubin, an expert in natural disaster recovery.

Some of those who lost homes and businesses to Sandy were promising to return and rebuild, but many sounded chastened by their encounter with nature's fury. They included Tom Shalvey of Warwick, R.I., whose 500-square-foot cottage on the beach in South Kingstown was washed away by raging surf, leaving a utility pipe as the only marker of where it once sat.

"We love the beach. We had many great times here," Shalvey said. "We will be back. But it will not be on the front row."

Huawei security chief says embracing its hacker critics

A man walks past a Huawei company logo outside the entrance of a Huawei office in Wuhan, Hubei province October 9, 2012. REUTERS/Stringerohn Suffolk, the company's global cybersecurity chief, told Reuters at a cybersecurity conference in New Delhi that he was sending a team of engineers to talk to German security researcher Felix Lindner, who has exposed vulnerabilities in the company's routers, from its $100 home Internet devices to multi-million dollar equipment run by telecommunications companies.

"We've very much taken on board Felix's views and you'll see over the coming period we've got a whole host of significant operations to deal with these issues," he said.

The move is a departure of sorts for Huawei, which has been battling critics on several fronts. It was last year blocked from bidding for a multi-billion dollar national broadband network contract in Australia over cyber-security fears.

A U.S. congressional committee recommended Washington to similarly bar Huawei and its Chinese rival ZTE Corp from being allowed to sell equipment to U.S. carriers.

INSPECTING HUAWEI'S CODE

Huawei has denied inserting deliberate backdoors in its products to allow for spying, and has invited governments to inspect its code.

In Britain, it set up a center to test out whether its products can withstand security threats, and has offered to set up something similar in both the United States and Australia.

But it has so far been reluctant to engage security researchers and hackers who challenge the company, something that Suffolk said was now changing, in part because of Lindner's allegations.

Suffolk, who was the British government's chief information officer before joining the Chinese company, said the team's trip to Germany had been slowed by visa issues, but would go ahead soon.

Lindner told Reuters after a presentation at a hacker conference in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month that, while he could not be sure there were no deliberate backdoors in the software, there was no evidence in the devices that he tested.

The problem, he said, was that the software was poorly written and left the equipment vulnerable to hackers.

Lindner's views fitted with a White House investigation that found no clear proof that Huawei was spying for the Chinese government, sources told Reuters earlier this month.

SYSTEMIC CHANGE

Suffolk said that Huawei had not sent anyone to attend an earlier presentation by Lindner in July but had done so for the Kuala Lumpur conference.

Their presence, he said, was not to dissuade Lindner from speaking but to see if he was revealing new information.

"We like these comments, although sometimes you think to yourself that's a bit of a slap in the face," Suffolk said.

"But sometimes you need a bit of a slap in the face to step back, not be emotive in your response, and say what do I systematically need to change so over time any these issues begin to reduce?"

The move to engage Lindner, Suffolk said, was part of a broader shift in Huawei's approach that he had led since joining the company in 2011.

He numbered among the changes making it easier for other security researchers to contact Huawei with vulnerabilities they have found. But his long-term goal, he said, was to change procedures to make all products more robust.

"I can fix the Felix issue in a few lines of code," he said. "But I'm interested in systemic change within Huawei."

Huawei's efforts to crack the lucrative U.S. market have been hurt by years of suspicion from U.S. lawmakers, who say the Shenzhen-based company, started by CEO Ren Zhengfei, a former Chinese military officer, has links with the Chinese government.

After an 11-month investigation, the U.S. House of Representatives' Intelligence Committee released a 52-page report urging U.S. firm to stop doing business with Huawei and its smaller rival ZTE due to potential influences from the Chinese government, which could pose security threats.

Taylor Swift's Red Sells 1 Million-Plus In First Week

Taylor Swift's Red Sells 1 Million-Plus In First WeekIn 2010, Swift's Speak Now moved 1.047 million albums in its first week, but her latest project, Red, has even topped that, selling 1.208 million copies in its debut, according to Nielsen SoundScan. And on top of besting her own record, Red notched the highest single-week sales in a decade, since Eminem's The Eminem Show sold 1.322 million in 2002.

Taylor Swift Is Loving Fan Reaction To 'Red'

With first-day sales north of 500,000 — including a record-setting 160,000 units on day one shifted at Target, which has an exclusive on the album's deluxe version with six extra tracks — Red was predicted to sell more than a million its first week. The milestone makes Swift the first woman in the Nielsen SoundScan era (which began in 1991) to have two albums cross the million unit mark in a single week.

Swift is also getting a boost in sales from a most unusual place: copies of Red sold alongside pizzas from Papa John's that count toward her first-week total. She's now easily passed Mumford & Sons' Babel, which moved 600,000 units earlier this month to grab the year's best debut mantle from Justin Bieber, whose Believe sold 374,000 back in June.

And Swift isn't only dominating the albums chart: She has also been paying close attention to iTunes sales to see which Red singles are connecting with her fans.

"They are all telling me their favorites," Swift told MTV News last week during the album's launch party. "It's so much fun, because their favorites determine my set list for my shows on tour next year. It determines a lot, so I'm just loving seeing the iTunes [songs] chart and getting to see which ones are floating to the top, and I will sit there and go, 'I didn't expect that. That's a really personal, emotional song. I didn't expect that to be right there at the top of the iTunes chart.' "

‘Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars,’

‘Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars,’ Week 6 Results, Who Got Voted Off?NOTE TO READERS: I was unable to watch Tuesday’s episode of “Dancing with the Stars,” as NYC still has wall-to-wall Sandy coverage. Instead, I listened to a feed in Boston.

It’s time for “The Most Shocking Elimination Ever: The Sequel.”

Results were revealed in reverse order on “Dancing with the Stars” on Tuesday night, and it became clear before the first half hour was up that one of the top three couples of the past two weeks would be going home. (Remember, with no elimination last week, scores were combined.)

Sabrina Bryan was eliminated at this point in Season 5 in spite of high marks, and we’ve been hearing about it ever since. Sabrina may have had a different partner, Louis Van Amstel, for this spin on the dance floor, but she still departs at Week 6 – one night after earning the first perfect 30 of the season.

In retrospect, the show set us up early for the result. She did get that perfect 30 and exhibited the vulnerability the judges wanted. Co-host Brooke Burke Charvet noted what week it was in her interview with Sabrina in the skybox. But as Sabrina herself said, the All-Star season in particular comes down to viewer votes, and she and Louis seem to have had fewer of them than anyone else. (One has to wonder how much the blackout on the East Coast affected Sabrina and Louis’s results.)

Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff had a complete turnaround from their chemistry problems and fighting last week – Len picked their Viennese waltz for the encore Tuesday. Still, they joined Sabrina and Louis under the red light, though for the first time this season, we didn’t have a bottom two. Trivia: With his perfect-scoring dance Monday, Apolo has more 30s than anyone else in “DWTS” history.

Musical performances came from Jason Mraz (accompanied on the dance floor by Chelsie Hightower and Mark Ballas) and Taylor Swift. We also had a Macy’s Stars of Dance.

Mark will return to dance again next week, reuniting with former partner Shawn Johnson. Derek, Shawn’s current pro, has a neck-vertebrae injury, so he is stepping aside to let his buddy take dance control. Mark led Shawn to the Mirror Ball in Season 8 when she was only 17 years old and he had to be careful about creating clean, fun routines. Will he make his choreography more sophisticated now that she’s older?

Next week, we’ll have the first-ever fusion dances. It’s exactly what you might think, i.e., two dance styles done to one song. Host Tom Bergeron picked couples out of a Mirror Ball, and it seemed as if the selectors randomly yelled out dance combinations. We’ll see …

Melissa Rycroft/Tony Dovolani: tango cha-cha-cha (selected in a dither by Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy)

Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd: samba is one; my audio cut out on the other (selected by Kelly Monaco and Valentin Chmerkovskiy)

Kirstie/Maks: quickstep samba (selected at the last second by Apolo and Karina)

Shawn/Mark: tango paso doble (selected by Melissa and Tony)

Emmitt/Cheryl: rumba samba (selected by Shawn and Derek)

Kelly/Val: cha-cha-cha foxtrot (selected by Sabrina and Louis)

Apolo/Karina: cha-cha-cha paso doble (selected quickly by Gilles and Peta)

Had Sabrina and Louis stuck around, they would have had a tango foxtrot, which was chosen quickly and assertively by Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke.
Election Night takes precedence next week – I assume we’re still voting Tuesday unless you voted early – so once again, we have no elimination. Readers, will fusion dances be creative or cringe-inducing?

'Star Wars Episode 7' And Disney: Five Burning Questions

Peter Mayhew, Mark Hamill, Alec Guinness and Harrison Ford in "Star Wars" 'Star Wars Episode 7' And Disney: Five Burning QuestionsNot so long ago, right here in this very galaxy, Disney bought Lucasfilm, and a new "Star Wars" movie was born.
Disney's latest acquisition and the announcement of "Star Wars Episode 7" is easily one of the most energizing and polarizing pop culture announcements in recent history. A seventh film in the "Star Wars" series has long been rumored, and soon, it'll be a reality, under Disney's supervision no less.
But with the news only hours old, many questions still surround the return of the Jedi to the silver screen. Here are five of them.
Role Call

The implication of the "Episode 7" title is that we're out of prequel territory and into the land beyond the original trilogy. That's scary turf for a few reasons, one of the big ones being... well, who's going to return? It's hard to imagine Harrison Ford getting on board with a Han Solo reprise given his cold stance towards "Star Wars" over the years, unless a Millennium Falcon-load of cash arrives at his front door. It's easier to see how other franchise mainstays — like C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels or Chewbacca himself, Peter Mayhew — might return without the promise of similarly massive paychecks. There's also this dreaded possibility: recasting. We shudder to think.
Playing It By The Books

Even though the theatrical story ended with "Return of the Jedi," the "Star Wars" saga has continued in the form of novels, comic books, video games and beyond. There are countless stories chronicling the continuing adventures of Luke Skywalker and friends to mine from — but will Disney feel obligated to honor a continuity known only by the most faithful of "Star Wars" fans, or will they bring their own stories to bear upon a greater mainstream audience?
What About George?

Many fans will feel that the founder of this franchise needs to have his say in the ongoing story. Others, like those who were burned by the prequel trilogy and Lucas' seemingly endless "Star Wars" alterations, are likely yub-nubbing in their finest Ewok attire right now. No matter how involved Lucas is going forward, this much is clear: he just handed the keys to one of the biggest film franchises of all time over to one of the biggest corporations of all time. To riff on Darth Vader's own words, Lucas is the student, and Mickey is the master now.
Who Is The New George?
If Lucas is no longer repping the Rebellion, who does Disney get to step into the franchise's spotlight? A big name is needed to spearhead "Star Wars" going forward, someone with name recognition, a person with credibility in the geek community. "Star Trek" helmer J.J. Abrams is an obvious, but otherwise committed, choice, as is "Avengers" director Joss Whedon — though he already has his hands full with a Disney-owned franchise of his own. Regardless of who Disney selects, it can't just be Joe the Director; they need a name who will reassure fans that one of the most precious genre stories of all time is in safe hands.
This Is The Apocalypse, Right?

Has the Empire won? Like, did Luke and Leia and Han and everyone fail and all that is wrong in the world is happening now? Let's not get carried away. Disney's "Star Wars" is a scary idea, sure, but it's not necessarily a bad one. Heck, it might even be a good one. Think about the possibilities: Pixar-animated "Star Wars" yarns, the unaltered original trilogy on Blu-ray (where Lucas was stubborn on this point, Disney will only see dollar signs), and brand new adventures starring some of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema. More "Star Wars" comes with lots of risk, but also lots of potential reward. As Yoda so wisely called it: "Do, or do not. There is no try." For better or worse, Disney is doing it. And that takes some seriously sized space-balls.

Star Wars Episode 7 Coming in 2015

Disney announced today that its acquiring Lucasfilm Ltd. The deal includes the “Star Wars” franchise, and plans have been launched to make a seventh film in the “Star Wars” series, and to continue the franchise beyond that.

In a press release, the company announced “Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas.”

The release went on to say “Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm…Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.”

Robert A. Iger, chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company, said in the release that there is “substantial pent up demand” for a new “Star Wars” movie. “In 2015, we’re planning to release Star Wars Episode 7 – the first feature film under the ‘Disney-Lucasfilm’ brand,” Iger said. “That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 – and our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.”

Jay Rasulo, senior executive vice president and CFO, The Walt Disney Company, added in the release that “We also expect to utilize Star Wars in other businesses including Parks & Resorts, in games and in our television business.”

1. Louis XIV and Louis Philippe of France

XIV was possibly the greatest king of France, ever. Know as the “Sun King” because people believed the sun actually shone out of his ass (seriously, it was considered an honor to watch him s**t), Louis defined the term absolute monarch.

His brother:
Philippe of France – Oh, Philippe. There is nothing wrong with the fact that the second most important man in France was gay, nor the fact that he flaunted it. It’s fine that he wore more makeup and perfume than any of the ladies at court. But it is bad when you allow your favorite male lover to poison your attractive first wife out of jealousy. And when your brother the King has to make sure you marry an ugly second wife to ensure it doesn’t happen again. And when your reaction on seeing her broad German face for the first time (in front of half the court) is “Mon Dieu. How can I sleep with THAT?!” Perhaps most embarrassing was the fact that Phillipe openly wore medallions of saints around his penis to enable him to impregnate his second wife. It worked: they had three children in 3 years.

2. Prince and Tyka Nelson

The famous person:
Prince, or the artist formerly known as Prince, or Prince again, is the mind and voice behind such classic songs as Purple Rain and such movies as… Purple Rain. For some reason, he is considered attractive to both sexes due to his androgynous, sexy style.

His sister:
Tyka Nelson – riding on her famous brother’s coat tails, Nelson released an albumin the 1980s. So far, so normal; most siblings of famous people will try to cash in on their connection at some point. Then she did interviews for said album with a stuffed blue dinosaur. She named her children Sir and President. Actually, considering some other celebrity baby names (we’re looking at you, Pilot Inspektor) that’s not that bad. She also claimed to have an imaginary boyfriend and covered her windows with tin foil. It was, obviously, a complete surprise to everyone years later when she admitted to being a crack addict during that time.

3. Jimmy Carter and Billy Carter

The famous person:
While perhaps best know for being the 39th president of the United States (and losing out spectacularly on a second term to Ronald Regan), Jimmy Carter is also the founder of Habitat for Humanity, and a Nobel Piece Prize winner. From his humble roots growing up on a farm, Jimmy proved what you can become if you apply yourself.

His brother:
Billy Carter proved…well all he really proved was an embarrassment to the Carter administration. While at first the press found his ramblings to be a nice juxtaposition to his more serious brother, going so far as to call him a “country philosopher,” but his seemingly deep pronouncements soon proved to be inspired by heavy amounts of alcohol. Trying to cash in on his problem and his incidental fame, the younger Carter released his own brand of beer, Billy Beer. All this was innocent. Billy didn’t really become a problem until his involvement in shady deals with Libya. When the press inquired why he, a man with no background in foreign trade would be interested in something like that he replied, “The only thing I can say is there is a hell of a lot more Arabians than there is Jews.” The ensuing fallout forced him into rehab and his brother to publicly separate himself from Billy.

4. Napoleon Bonaparte and Pauline Bonaparte

The famous person:
Napoleon Bonaparte – Emperor of France. Napoleon is famous for being one of the greatest military strategists if all time. He conquered huge swathes of Europe, installing his family members are puppet kings and queens so he would always have control. Despite his generosity and general badassness, one of his siblings didn’t worry too much about making him mad.

His sister:
Pauline Bonaparte – Where do we start? She used her servants as footstools (even for the time this was NOT normal) and sold the country Napoleon put her in charge of for a few million francs. Worst of all (in her brother’s eyes) was the fact that Pauline was an unrepentant loose woman. Seriously, she could put most drunk college girls to shame. Her love affairs were so numerous and so obvious that Napoleon finally forced her to get married, hoping to stop this embarrassment to his greatness. When that husband died, he found a new one for her. Pauline was not put off. She had one of the most famous artists of the time do a sculpture of her completely naked, ensuring her “goods” were well advertised across Europe. A steady stream of admirers followed, and Napoleon was mortified.

The famous person:
John Quincy Adams – son of President John Adams and eventually President himself, he later served in the House of Representatives for 17 years where he was revered as an august statesman.

His brother:
Charles Adams – when your dad calls you “a madman possessed by the devil” it usually means he’s had one too many. In this case it was one of the founding fathers of the United States talking about his son Charles. The younger Adams was a serious alcoholic who was almost thrown out of Harvard for his conduct. Later in life he was involved in shady land deals, further ruining his reputation. His father eventually disowned him, while his brother became President. Ouch.

6.
George VI and the Duke of Windsor

The famous person:
Born during the Victorian Era, George VI was king of England during WWII and was father of the current queen, Elizabeth II. While a rather boring King, George did help inspire the people during the blitz, and took the bombing of Buckingham Palace in stride. He stuttered, was a secret alcoholic, a heavy smoker, and died quietly in 1952. Pretty average.

His brother:
The Duke of Windsor was decidedly not average. Though born to be king, he abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. While this has been cast as one of the greatest romances ever, it was actually a dysfunctional relationship where both partners cheated, drank themselves to oblivion, and collaborated with the Nazis. Seriously. The former Edward VIII and his wife even met Hitler at his holiday home. Hitler’s plan was to make Edward a puppet king after he invaded England. The Royal Family was so embarrassed by the Duke’s unabashed Nazi sympathies that they basically exiled him to the Caribbean for the whole of WWII.

7.
Al Capone and James Vincenzo Capone

The famous person:
Al Capone was one of the most famous gangsters of all time. Prohibition increased his wealth and power as he ran an effective bootlegging ring. He was only brought down due to a tax evasion technicality and spent most of the rest of his life in Alcatraz.

His brother:
In most families, Al would be the embarrassment. However, while he was out making a success of himself by criminal means, his brother “Vince” ran away from home to join the circus, fought in WWI, and eventually became a policeman. Not in Illinois obviously, that would be a conflict of interest. In Nebraska. Vince spent Prohibition shutting down the same type of illegal alcohol productions that were making his brother rich and powerful. He was known as “Two-Gun Hart” and became famous in the Midwest for his law enforcement prowess. Al Capone must have been mortified.

Selena Gomez Forgets To Wear Pants

Selena Gomez, Selena Gomez Forgets To Wear PantsSelena Gomez, Selena Gomez Forgets To Wear PantsSelena Gomez is the 17 year old star of the hit Disney show “Wizards of Waverly Place”. She also is incredibly absent minded and a terrible role model for young girls.
As the photos below show, Selena Gomez completely forgets to wear pants. How a woman could go out and have her picture taken without remembering to put on a decent pair of trousers is beyond me. Maybe her mind was hazy from all the black tar heroin and wild sex orgies these Disney stars seem to love to partake in.

Not only did Selena Gomez forget to put on pants, but the sweater she is wearing doesn’t seem to fit her at all. It is entirely too long. How could she possibly think that was a good fit for a sweater? She is practically swimming in it.

Selena Gomez is a terrible role model for young girls, and should be lashed with reeds immediately. As these pictures show she has a dubious fashion sense, and probably dresses herself in some drug and sex filled haze.

AnnaSophia Robb Is Carrie Bradshaw

While she's not yet old enough to actually be having sex in the city, or anywhere else for the matter, a young version of Carrie Bradshaw, a character first canonized by Sarah Jessica Parker and now portrayed in her salad days by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Race to Witch Mountain's AnnaSophia Robb, was decked out in 80s garb, taking on New York City like she owned the place, while filming the upcoming CW series, The Carrie Diaries.

Robb, who most recently starred with Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, Kevin Sorbo and Carrie Underwood in Soul Surfer, will play the 18-year-old Carrie during her senior year of high school, when she's just starting to form her famous ideas on relationships, singlehood, friendships, creativity and, yes, sex.

Filming for the pilot of The Carrie Diaries, which is expected to premiere on the CW sometime in January, is well underway, though Carrie is too young in it to have met her best buds Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) yet, to say nothing of Big (Chris Noth). Instead, Robb as Carrie Bradshaw will be joined by chronologically earlier BFFs Jill Thompson (Ellen Wong) and Maggie Landers

End Of Watch's Natalie Martinez: 'I Love Boys'

End Of Watch's Natalie Martinez: 'I Love Boys'Natalie Martinez, 28, the stunning Cuban-American model who has long been a face for the J.Lo brand by Jennifer Lopez and has appeared in several music videos, including "Rain Over Me" by Pitbull, featuring Marc Anthony, stepped into one of her first major motion picture roles in this fall's End of Watch, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena and Anna Kendrick, and — while the movie had a serious subject matter — Martinez had the time of her life on set.

"I love it," Martinez told Uinterview exclusively about acting with Gyllenhaal and Pena. "I love boys. I had such a good time with them in the sense that they just crack jokes all the time. They're fun." And the actors got a little into character during filming too. "I play Michael Pena's wife; Anna Kendrick was Jake Gyllenhaal's love interest," she told us. "So they were a little protective over us. It was fun; it was just fun to be there with such a great cast and people who just got along so great."

More than just sitting back and enjoying the testosterone, however, Martinez found herself impressed by the emphasis End of Watch placed on the family lives of law enforcement officials. "I think it's really important," she said. "It gives them a human characteristic to the character. You feel you know them a little bit more. It makes it a little bit more personal, because you know what they’re like at the home front. We see these guys riding around all the time, but we forget that they’re husbands, fathers, they’re brothers, they’re sons. And they have that family that they go back home to."

Powerful storm surges from Superstorm Sandy caused a nearly 170-foot water tanker to run aground in Staten Island, N.Y., on Monday night. The front third of the tanker is grounded into Front Street. Victoria's Secret Supermodel Miranda Kerr Sizzles In Nude Photos

Victoria's Secret Supermodel Miranda Kerr Sizzles In Nude Photos, sexy girl, good bodyAustralian Victoria’s Secret supermodel Miranda Kerr, 29, strips nude for Harper’s Bazaar's fall Fashion Issue. So what does nudity have to do with fashion? It’s all about the accessories. Photographer Terry Richardson, famous for his scantily-clad shoots, snaps Kerr in black-and-white and totally naked except for several pairs of tall boots. “I really love over-the-knee boots. I think they’re super sexy and they’re fun,” Kerr said in a behind-the-scenes video. “And they’re also very strong and empowering.”

The September issue, which hits newsstands on August 21 and features Gwen Stefani in pink on the front cover, shows Kerr sporting boots by Tom Ford, Hermes and Reed Krakoff — but Kerr insists that it’s not about the brand or the price tag for her. “I have always admired Audrey Hepburn’s style and my Nan has always been a style icon for me,” Kerr told the magazine. “Growing up I would play in her wardrobe and was very influenced by her. She taught me that you don’t need to have a lot of money to have style. It’s the way you put things together and how you carry yourself.” Kerr, who has an 18-month-old son with actor Orlando Bloom, also values comfort. “I prefer investing in classic, well-tailored pieces,” Kerr continued. “For me it’s all about keeping things simple and feeling comfortable in what I am wearing.”

Victoria's Secret Supermodel Miranda Kerr Sizzles In Nude Photos, sexy girl, good bodyJudging from the shoot, Kerr’s most comfortable outfit appears to be her birthday suit. Kerr has posed nude several times before, namely for GQ Magazine, Australian Rolling Stone, Wmagazine and the 2010 Pirelli calendar, and is a lingerie runway regular for Victoria’s Secret. Some recently leaked nude pictures of the model, however, weren’t originally intended for public consumption. French photographer Laurent Darmon, who shot Kerr naked before she became famous, reportedly posted the risqué shots on his website this past weekend before being forced to take them down, according to NY Daily News.

As if there’s any doubt left from the pictures as to whether she takes care of her body, Kerr also addresses her passion for healthy living in the style Q&A. "I live by the philosophy that beauty starts from within and I make a conscious effort to fill my body with nutrients through the food I eat," Kerr said. "Becoming a mother has made me even more aware and more passionate about nutrition and wellness. So much so that I am now a certified health coach practitioner." The model, who is an avid yoga and Pilates practitioner, also reveals tips about her balanced diet. “I adopt the 80/20 rule. 80% good, 20% indulgent and that works for me and my body personally," Kerr said. "I love food and enjoy eating fresh organic produce. I drink warm water and lemon every morning and I also drink lots of good quality purified and preferably alkaline water throughout the day. My Nan introduced me to Noni juice when I was twelve years old, which I drink twice daily.”

Need Change? Get A New Hairstyle

bangstyle.com beauty Need Change? Get A New HairstyleI cannever tell when it’s going to happen, but every once in a while I’ll have this urge to change my look. I usually go about fulfilling my compulsion by penciling in a full day of shopping for a new wardrobe. But on this particular day, a wardrobe transformation wasn’t going to do it for me. I needed a dramatic change, something exciting. Then it finally clicked—I needed a new hairstyle.

Having recently moved to a new area, I realized that getting my hair done wouldn’t just be a quick trip to the salon I use to frequent. Instead, I had to do some research to find out where I could get a new ‘do. Fortunately, research didn’t mean I had to waste away hours in front of the computer or at a magazine stand searching for 2012′s hottest haircuts and styles.
Using the BANGSTYLE Hairstyle App, I was able to browse recently uploaded photos of hair by people who had just gotten their hair done, as well as by stylists who created each new look. At the same time, I was able to locate some of the hottest hair salons in my area with just a touch of a button.
bangstyle.com beauty Need Change? Get A New HairstyleAfter sharing a number of my favorite hairstyles on Facebook, pinning them to Pinterest, tweeting them via Twitter, and adding them to my BANGSTYLE Inspiration Collection, I finally chose the style that satisfied my need for change; the perfect new look, I thought.
Once I arrived to the nearest salon with the highest BANGSTYLE score, I met with a professional and friendly stylist who gave me tips and ideas for new hairstyles and haircare. She was very personable and helpful, providing me with a pleasant experience. Talking with her for a while made me feel like I had come to the right place. I 100% trusted her to do what she felt was good for my hair.
Waiting for my hair transformation, I perused through articles on the BANGSTYLE Hairstyle App‘s News Reader. Even during my hair appointment, I was discovering up-and-coming trends and getting educated on topics relating to fashion, beauty, art, entertainment, food, music, and technology.
Since I am usually the kind of person who goes to a new stylist every time I get my hair done, using the BANGSTYLE app was a great way to locate the best stylists and salons; I didn’t have to feel worried about being disappointed with my new hairstyle. If you’re the kind of person who gets their hair done by the same stylist every time, but you’ve recently moved to a new area, I highly recommend using the BANGSTYLE app to find your go-to stylist. Alleged Real-Life '50 Shades Of Grey' Ends In Arrest

Alleged Real-Life '50 Shades Of Grey' Ends In ArrestThey say that life imitates art ... or something like it, and that's exactly what happened with alleged New York sadomasochistic couple Edward Sonderling, 53, and Frankie Santiago, 27, who were playing out a real-life Fifty Shades of Grey fantasy sex life a la E.L. James' now famous characters, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, when things got violent — and not in a sexy way.

Santiago had reportedly been in a live-in slave / master relationship with Sonderling, a Brown graduate and CEO of his own investment banking firm, for three years when she snapped, allegedly due to Sonderling's philandering ways, as a series of Santiago's texts to her master later revealed, reports the New York Post.

"If I ever see you with her I will not hold back," Santiago reportedly texted Sonderling. "I have nothing to lose" and "I hope she has a disease you catch" were some of the other texts that led Sonderling to press stalking, criminal mischief and aggravated harassment charges against his former sex slave.

Santiago also reportedly appeared one night at her lover's home on East 57th Street to confront him, and an altercation broke out which ended with her allegedly breaking one of Sonderling's car windows. "Ok, we got into an argument," Santiago later told the paper. "A car window broke. Who cares? It broke."

Santiago also said that the couple's life was nothing like E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey. "I'm sure people want so badly to believe that that book is real," she said, but her life was much more complicated. "We actually [had] a real life together. We're friends. We like to wear costumes. We party together."

An insider, who said that Sonderling allegedly spoke of himself as a "whipping aficionado" and bragged that he whipped Santiago "every morning before breakfast," had a different story. "Basically, she was there to serve his sexual needs," the source said. "She's his toy, his fetish slave."
