'Lab Rats' in space: A game-changing episode

The "Lab Rats" have faced a lot this season, not the least of which was adjusting to life in high school. On Nov. 5, they take on the final frontier in "Mission: Space." The adventure introduces new hurtles, new abilities and a not-so-new villain that will shake up the series. Billy Unger (Chase), Kelli Berglund (Bree), Spencer Boldman (Adam), Tyrel Jackson Williams (Leo) and Hal Sparks (Davenport) teases the big episode and considered what's to come when the Disney XD hit returns for Season 2.
"This is one of our special episodes where we go on a mission and you get to see the Lab Rats in action, as opposed to in school," Unger set up. "Mr. Davenport's space station has been hit by an asteroid, and we have to save the workers aboard the space station. There are lives at stake and it's our first rescue mission. It's suspenseful!"
Mission episodes are always a bit more serious, but as always, fans can expect plenty of laughs.

"What's so cool about all the episodes we shoot is there's a mix of drama and comedy," Boldman said. "This is an action-packed episode. Adam actually goes out in the space and is floating around. We're literally in a green screen dome. No matter where the camera goes, it's all green screen. They can put whatever they want in the background. Mixing stuff like that with comedy is a recipe for a good episode."

Sparks agrees that laughs are a fundamental ingredient in the success of "Lab Rat" , even though he totally geeks out over the science.

"We will always opt for the joke over accurate science," he admits . "The hard part is keeping my inner nerd from coming out and explaining how things really work. Yes, I'm that guy. I designed Mr. D.'s cell phone. The super watch he wears is mine. I'm much closer to him than people think, except for the billionaire part, but I'm working on that."

Another ingredient that fuels any adventure is a devious villain with an evil plot. In this episode, Marcus reveals his true colors.

"Not only does he hate Leo, but he's a bad guy in general, and he works for a bigger, bad guy!" Williams divulges.

When the troublemaker breaks into the lab, Mr. D has his hands full. The Rats are left hanging in space, so Leo steps in to save the day ... Sort of.
"We have Leo guiding us through this mission, which is the last thing we need," Unger jokes. "He's going through his list of souvenir requests!"
In the midst of the action, the Rats are also in for a big surprise.

"They discover they have different special abilities!" Boldman reveals.
Only Chase learns what his is, which leaves the rest of the Rats speculating about what their new abilities will be. They'll have to wait till next season to find out, and so will fans!
Talk of special abilities naturally leads to a conversation about of whose ability each of them would want in the real world. Sparks covets Chase's newfound gift, but the rest of the crew agree on Bree's super speed. Berglund, in particular, said it would come in handy while she was getting ready in the morning.

Ironically, Bree's speedy moves don't speed things up on set.
"Every time I use my super speed, I have to do four different shots," Berglund explained. "They have to get an empty shot, then take a shot of everyone having wind blown on them, then another shot of me doing it by myself, and then another shot of all of us doing it together."

"It's all aired on top of each other to look like she's super speedy, which is a wonder, but it's pretty time consuming," Williams adds.
Chase's bionic hearing and Adam's lazar eyes are a bit easier to pull off. The guys just have to stand perfectly still for about 20 minutes while the cameras zoom in or out, depending on the ability.
While the team was happy to talk special effects, no one would reveal how this game changing space mission will go.

"The ending of the episode is shrouded in secrecy," Williams hedges. "It's a really big cliff-hanger that pumps up the second season and makes you wonder, 'What in the world is going to happen next? '"
The cast didn't know yet when MSN TV visited, but they had some ideas. The Rats are anxious to uncover their new powers. Williams would like to see the return of his future self so he can work with his brother Tyler ("Go On") again, and Berglund wants to see her character grow-up a bit more and maybe even land a boyfriend.
Sparks, meanwhile, seemed to have the inside scoop.

"Next season, they're going to debut a lot of stuff," Sparks reveales. "It will be much more mission heavy. The school scenes are their Clark Kent moments, as opposed to the Superman moments. While those scenes are great, school is covered in a lot of Disney shows, so I'm looking forward to bigger missions and seeing more of the house and the environments they get into on missions."

Boldman, however, isn't ready to leave school behind. "I like it when we have a big mission episode, and then the next episode is about us going to school, because that's what the show's about, essentially," he said. he missions are easy, but being normal is hard for us."

While the Rats have gotten more comfortable at school and upped Leo's hallway cred, this quartet still doesn't quite fit in.
"Leo hasn't gotten a wedgie since they showed up, but they're still not the popular kids," Williams said with a laugh. "They are those kids who are really cool by themselves, but don't feel welcomed by everybody else. Leo's quirky and nerdy, and Adam, Bree and Chase can't show the world how cool they are because of the bionics. Plus, if they get too emotional, they glitch -- and you get pretty emotional when you're teenager!"

The Season 2 premiere date hasn't been revealed yet, so enjoy the latest mission and stay tuned for more laughs, action and glitches.
